More About the Interactive Book-Webscene (IBW) Reading Experience…

The IBW combines the reading of a print book with the interactivity of a website. Briefly, here is how it works: at the end of a chapter in an IBW book, readers are directed to a specific link on the book's website where they view a webscene . Webscenes may be illustrations, animation, video or audio clips, puzzles or games. Each webscene is essential to the storytelling and furthers the story. After viewing the webscene, the reader returns to the book to read another chapter, after which are instructions to view another webscene, and so on. An IBW title typically contains 5-10 webscenes.

Here are some IBW titles and their audiences :

The Busy Preschooler's Guide to Learning can serve as a preschool curriculum. It contains 26 activities designed around the letters of the alphabet. Activities utilize various learning styles (auditory, visual, kinetic, etc.) to explore the 105 skills desirable for school readiness. Each activity is designed for both individual and group activity. Also available are instructions for workshops encouraging parental involvement, including components for ELL-Spanish language participants.

Skill areas addressed include reading readiness, size, color and shapes, numbers, position and direction, time, listening and sequencing, motor skills and social-emotional development.

KA Reader stories support any phonics-based curriculum by focusing on vocabulary development. Plotlines in this series contain the nearly 2,000 words contained in the 245 word pattern families. Stories contain decodable text for vocabulary expansion and development of reading comprehension skills. Each book contains 5-8 webscenes.

Each book contains a comparison, word-by-word Spanish translation which enables non-English speaking parents to be involved in their children's education.

Online activities in both English and English-Spanish reinforce learning in areas such as vocabulary, comprehension, spelling and keyboarding skills.

Earth Academy 7 (EA7) is a 3-level series that aligns the reading skills of beginning, early and chapter readers with science themes, grade 1-3 curriculum, woven into the plotlines. Series supports science literacy efforts. Online activities reinforce science themes and concepts.

The Ghost Hunter series is high interest, low vocabulary (grade 4). Complex, layered plotlines develop analytical and critical thinking skills. Books are accurate with regard to history, events and cultures. Online lesson plans align with language arts, science and math curriculums.
